Fishing

INTRODUCTION

Fishing like farming has always been a mainstay of the Highland economy. With such a long and diverse coastline it was inevitable that Highland communities would turn to the sea for food and for work. Whole families became involved in the catching, the processing and the selling of their fish. As herring shoals moved around the coast so too the boats and the gutters move with them. From Cromarty to Wick and then over west to Stornoway they would travel in search of the 'silver darlings'.

But deep-sea fishing has always been a dangerous business and tragedy at sea is never far away. Fishing communities are as a result tight-knit and deeply religious in their ways.
